Managing Partner of the New York office and Co-Chair of Winston & Strawn’s Finance Practice, Mats has more than 25 years of experience representing leading banks, finance companies, and direct lenders in syndicated financings and restructurings, with an emphasis on leveraged buyouts and recapitalizations of private equity sponsored enterprises.
Mats represents lead arrangers, agents, lenders, investors, sponsors, and borrowers in domestic and cross-border senior and junior financings, with an emphasis on leveraged buyouts and recapitalizations of private equity sponsored enterprises.
He has represented domestic and international commercial and investment banks, finance companies, private equity funds, hedge funds, publicly and privately held corporations. Mats has represented portfolio companies in leveraged, high grade, and mezzanine financings, including acquisitions, working capital facilities, restructurings and workouts covering many industries, including hospitality, media and telecommunications, healthcare, retail, and energy.
Mats was named in the 2023 “Lawdragon 500: The Legends” list. From 2020–2024, he was recognized in Lawdragon’s “500 Leading Lawyers in America” guide to the nation’s top lawyers. He was also listed in the 2015–2024 editions of Lawdragon’s “The Influencers: The 500 Leading Lawyers in America” and in the 2024 edition of Lawdragon’s “500 Leading Dealmakers in America.” Mats was also recognized in the 2016–2024 editions of The Legal 500 U.S. for his finance work within the commercial lending industry. In 2018, he was listed for Super Lawyers: NY Metro edition. Additionally, IFLR1000 recognized Mats as “Highly Regarded” in the state of New York for Banking and Finance in 2020.
Mats serves as Co-Chair of the firm’s Finance Practice, and is a member of the Executive Committee.

Education
Mats received a LL.B. from Stockholm University in 1984, and a LL.M. from the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Law in 1985. In 1984-85, Mats was a Fulbright Scholar.
